Snacks can be a vital part of a healthy PCOS diet, especially when they’re used to bridge your blood sugar levels from one meal to the next.

When it comes to snacking, you’ll want to keep a couple things in mind:
➡️ don’t let your carbs be naked or lonely (aka avoid eating carbs by themselves if possible)

➡️ when choosing carbs, aim for high fiber carbs to keep your blood sugar levels more stable and keep you feeling full for longer

➡️ aim for at least 2 macronutrients at snacks...this could be carbs + protein; protein + fat; carbs + fat; or all 3 macros together!

This snackle box is perfect when you want to have a smorgasbord of snack options to share with someone else.

I loaded my PCOS snack box up with:
🥜 Fat & Protein: pepitas, pistachios, cheese, Greek yogurt ranch dip

🍊 Fiber/Carbs: seed crackers, clementines, mini bell peppers, cucumbers

📢 Contrary to popular belief, not everyone with PCOS needs to (or should!) avoid dairy. Dairy can be a great source of quality protein, probiotics, calcium, and vitamin D - all things that can benefit PCOS symptoms. Of course, if you have an allergy or intolerance, you should avoid it 🤍

Happy September and Happy PCOS Awareness Month!

Today is also World PCOS Day!

Polycystic ovary syndrome is the most common cause of anovulatory infertility. And while it can cause heartbreaking infertility for many with the condition, it’s not solely a reproductive struggle…it’s actually a lifelong metabolic disorder.

Common PCOS symptoms include infertility, irregular periods, acne, hirsutism (unwanted facial and body hair), and hair loss. Other side effects include carb cravings, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, fatty liver, anxiety, depression, etc.

1 in 10 people have PCOS, although experts believe that the true number is closer to 1 in 5 people (🤯🤯) in the world have PCOS.

So if you’re ever feeling completely alone and as if nobody understands your struggles…trust me, you are certainly not alone! ♥️

Why do we need anti-inflammatory foods? 🔥

Inflammation is a good thing for when our bodies need to fight infection or illness, and this typically should decrease once the body has rid itself of whatever infection.

In some people, chronic inflammation exists and can manifest in ways such as joint pain, autoimmune disease, digestive issues, migraines/headaches, fatigue, increased weight (especially in the abdominal region).

Chronic inflammation is often present in PCOS and can be a big driving factor for many of the crappy symptoms that PCOS brings. Sooooo how can we reduce inflammation??

Certain foods have been identified as having anti-inflammatory properties, such as:

🐟salmon - high in EPA & DHA omega 3 fatty acids that have been proven in multiple studies to help reduce inflammation

🥦broccoli - contains the anti-inflammatory components: carotenoids and flavonoids. Broccoli is also a good source of fiber, folate, and vitamin K.

🫑bell peppers - contain the powerful antioxidants vitamin C and quercetin.

🥑avocado - they contain carotenoids and tocopherols which have been shown to help reduce inflammation, but, they’re also a great source of monounsaturated fats, fiber, potassium, folate, magnesium, and vitamin C to name a few

🌰 walnuts - rich source of vitamin E, polyphenols, and ALA omega 3s. Also a great source of zinc, iron, and magnesium.

🍌 bananas - packed with tons of antioxidants, especially vitamins B6 & C, and flavonoids, which have anti-inflammatory properties. Also a great source of fiber and other vital vitamins & minerals.

Want to boost your chances of getting pregnant with PCOS? Here’s how you can do just that!

With PCOS, it often feels like there’s so many things that aren’t in your control. But, if you’re thinking about trying to conceive in the next year, there are so many things that are in your control that may make your fertility journey significantly easier!

As a PCOS dietitian, I’d recommend starting these things now:

🍎 Eat a nutrient dense diet. You can start by having a nutrient-packed breakfast that contains fiber, protein, and healthy fats. Some examples are: scrambled eggs (or a tofu scramble) with avocado toast; a protein smoothie (frozen fruit, protein powder, milk, chia seeds, etc); or a Greek yogurt bowl with fresh berries and chopped walnuts.

💊 Get the right-for-you supplements on board now. This could look different for everyone but some common supplements you may consider are a prenatal vitamin, inositol, vitamin D supplement, or a fish oil supplement. Inositol is the most well-studied supplement for PCOS. It has been shown to improve menstrual cycle regularity, improve egg quality, and reduce the risk of gestational diabetes.
