What Is Triple Complex Magnesium?

Triple Complex Magnesium is a dietary supplement made by the US-based company BioEmblem. It’s a capsule supplement that contains different forms of magnesium.

Triple Complex Magnesium Health Claims

According to the BioEmblem website, the Triple Complex Magnesium uses a proprietary blend of 3 types of magnesium which offers the best balance of various benefits.

The company claims their magnesium blend:

  • Promotes cell energy and muscle recovery
  • Has a calming effect
  • Is best absorbed by the body for general magnesium benefits

The company goes on to state that magnesium can help with:

  • Bone health
  • Muscle health
  • Heart health
  • Cognitive function
  • Energy production
  • Nerve function

BioEmblem prides themselves on their manufacturing process, citing that they conduct triple lab testing and additionally conduct third party testing. They also state that they do not use any artificial fillers or binders.

BioEmblem also reports that Triple Complex Magnesium was voted “Best Overall Magnesium Supplement” by Healthline.

This all sounds impressive but let’s actually take a look at what’s in it.

BioEmblem Triple Complex Magnesium Supplement Facts

In two capsules of the BioEmblem Triple Complex Magnesium supplement, there is 300 mg of elemental magnesium. This is a blend of 3 different types of magnesium: magnesium malate, glycinate, and citrate.

In the FAQs section, it states that each serving contains equal amounts of each magnesium type, so 100 mg of each of the 3 magnesium types to make up the 300 mg you get per serving. Let’s talk about the benefits of magnesium and then break down each magnesium type.

Magnesium supplements have increased in popularity in the past several years, partly because there is more research showing the effectiveness of this essential mineral.

Magnesium plays a big role in our overall health and is involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions. Recent studies have found that up to 30% of the population has a magnesium deficiency (1).

Magnesium supplementation may help to:

  • Lessen stress and anxiety (2)
  • Improve sleep quality
  • Lower insulin resistance and reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Improve PMS symptoms (3)
  • Relax and soothe achy muscles
  • Improve cognition
  • Control blood pressure levels

Alright, let’s take a look at each magnesium type that’s in BioEmblem’s Triple Magnesium Complex supplement.

Magnesium Malate

Magnesium malate is a form of magnesium that’s bound to malic acid. This type of magnesium is well-absorbed by the body. It doesn’t tend to have a laxative effect on your digestive system.

It’s often used to treat fatigue and muscle weakness.

Magnesium Glycinate

Magnesium glycinate, also known as magnesium bisglycinate, is a form of magnesium that is chelated. This means that the magnesium is bound to an amino acid – in this case, the amino acid is glycine.

This form of magnesium is well absorbed and well tolerated. It doesn’t tend to have a laxative effect like other forms of magnesium. However, at higher doses, it may cause some digestive discomfort or diarrhea.

Magnesium glycinate is often regarded for its calming effects.

Magnesium Citrate

This is one of the most common forms of magnesium that you’ll find in supplements. Magnesium citrate is a form of magnesium that’s bound with citric acid. It’s highly bioavailable, so your body will absorb it well, and it’s cost effective.

Magnesium citrate is most known for its ability to promote bowel regularity since it does tend to have a laxative effect for many people. In fact, because of its laxative effect, magnesium citrate is sometimes used as part of the bowel prep before a colonoscopy.

If you already struggle with digestive issues like bloating, cramping, and diarrhea, you may need to rethink this one…although, with only 100 mg of magnesium citrate in this supplement, it may not be an issue.

Ok, now that you know what’s actually in it, let’s talk about some pros and cons of this supplement.

Pros of BioEmblem Triple Complex Magnesium

  • Third Party Tested. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not regulate or approve of any dietary supplements, their labeling, or health claims. It’s not uncommon to find supplements on the market that don’t actually have what they’re advertising inside their supplements. Thankfully you don’t have to worry about that with this supplement since BioEmblem has their Triple Complex Magnesium supplements third party tested to ensure quality and purity.

  • Quality ingredients. All magnesium forms within this dietary supplement are high-quality forms that are easy for our bodies to absorb.

  • Evidence-Based. While many dietary supplements make ambitious claims that are often untrue, the claims made by the Triple Complex Magnesium supplement do seem to be supported by research studies.

  • Vegan. This supplement meets the standards for those following a plant-based or vegan diet.

  • Cost. If you respond well to this blend of magnesium, it’s pretty competitively priced for this 45 day supply. Subscribe and save options can save you money through the BioEmblem website or on Amazon too.

Cons of BioEmblem Triple Complex Magnesium

  • Possible Digestive Discomfort. While this supplement does use some forms of magnesium that don’t tend to affect the digestive system, one form (magnesium citrate) may cause a laxative effect for some people.

  • Cost. I know this was a pro, but it could also be a con. Hear me out! Two of these forms of magnesium (glycinate and malate) are more expensive forms than magnesium citrate is. If you’re able to get similar effects from a supplement that contains only magnesium citrate, you can likely find it for significantly less money.

Should You Take BioEmblem Triple Complex Magnesium?

Maybe. Maybe not. It will always depend on your unique medical needs and symptoms. I always recommend consulting with your doctor or healthcare provider before beginning any dietary supplement.

That said, if you feel that you’d benefit from magnesium supplementation, the BioEmblem Triple Complex Magnesium does seem like a good option to try.

There seem to be multiple benefits that are supported by the research. This supplement also contains forms of magnesium that are very well absorbed.

If you struggle with diarrhea at baseline, be aware that there is a small amount of magnesium citrate in this supplement that may exacerbate digestive issues like diarrhea or bloating. However, if you struggle with constipation routinely, this may be a great side effect for you!

The Bottom Line

Triple Complex Magnesium is a dietary supplement made by the US-based company BioEmblem. In 2 capsules, you receive 310 mg of magnesium from a blend of 3 types of magnesium: citrate, glycinate, and malate.

Many people do not get enough magnesium in their diets. Magnesium helps to reduce stress, anxiety, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes risk, inflammation, and PMS symptoms. It may also improve sleep quality, cognition, and soothe achy muscles.

BioEmblem Triple Magnesium Complex is third party tested for quality and purity. If you will benefit from magnesium supplementation, the types of magnesium in this supplement are well absorbed and often well tolerated.
