Moon Juice Magnesi-Om: A Dietitian’s Honest Review

Have you seen the viral Moon Juice Magnesi-Om supplement on TikTok? Maybe you saw it mixed into a sleepy girl mocktail and now you’re wondering if it’s worth the hype?

As a registered dietitian who specializes in PCOS and women’s health, I get asked about magnesium a lot. Let me take the guesswork out of it for you. 

This blog post is going to dive into what Moon Juice Magnesi-Om actually is, what it may be used for, the pros and cons of it, and my honest thoughts on whether or not you should actually be taking it.

What is Moon Juice Magnesi-Om?

Magnesi-Om is a dietary supplement made by the US-based company Moon Juice. It’s a powdered mix of magnesium and L-theanine. 

According to the website, here’s how to use it: Mix 1 tsp of our magnesium powder in water every night or when you need to chill. Or mix with tart cherry juice + sparkling water to make your own Sleepy Girl Mocktail.

It’s available in an unflavored version, or in the flavors berry or blue lemon. 

Magnesi-Om Health Claims

The Moon Juice website claims that the ingredients in Magnesi-Om have multiple benefits, including:

  • Relaxation. Enhances feelings of calm, improves mood, reduces muscle aches

  • Brain Health. Supports healthy cognitive aging and brain function

  • Regularity. Supports regular bowel movements, soothes and alleviates mild bloating during PMS

The company prides itself on the ingredients it uses, claiming they’re 100% traceable, unadulterated, and sustainably sourced.

Moon Juice Magnesi-om Supplement Facts

Here’s what’s inside 1 teaspoon of Magnesi-Om powder:

1. Magnesium 310 mg

Magnesium is an essential mineral that plays a big role in our overall health. Recent research has found that up to 30% of the adult population has subclinical magnesium deficiency (1). For unclear reasons, many women with PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) tend to have lower levels of magnesium than those who don’t have PCOS (2).

Magnesium has the ability to: 

The Magnesi-Om powder contains 310 mg of a magnesium chelate blend. It’s a blend of 3 different types of magnesium: magnesium citrate, magnesium gluconate, and magnesium acetyl taurinate. 

These are highly bioavailable forms of magnesium and well absorbed by the body. One thing to note about these forms of magnesium is that they can impact your digestive system. Upset stomach, abdominal cramping, and diarrhea are common side effects of these types of magnesium. 

If you struggle with constipation, this magnesium supplement may be a benefit for you. However, if you already struggle with diarrhea or digestive issues, this type of magnesium may further worsen those issues.

Most research studies that look at the positive effects of magnesium supplements used a dose of 200 to 600 mg of magnesium. The Magnesi-Om powder does provide a decent amount of magnesium according to the typical therapeutic dosage range.

2. L-theanine 112 mg

L-theanine is an amino acid that is naturally found in white, black, oolong, and green tea, and some mushrooms. It’s known to support the nervous system and promotes calmness, sleep, and relaxation.

L-theanine may help: 

  • Reduce stress and anxiety 
  • Lower cortisol levels
  • Improve mental alertness and focus
  • Increase immunity
  • Lower inflammation

The L-theanine dosage used in research studies was typically 200 to 400 mg daily. The Moon Juice Magnesi-Om powder provides less than the typical therapeutic dosage. 

Although L-theanine does occur naturally in certain teas, it’s in much smaller amounts than what’s typically found in L-theanine supplements. There isn’t long-term safety data established for L-theanine supplements. 

Additionally, the safety of L-theanine supplementation during pregnancy or breastfeeding isn’t super clear. It’s best to talk to your doctor if you’re pregnant or planning to become pregnant as to whether this supplement is OK for you.

In the flavored versions of Magnesi-Om, other ingredients include citric acid, monk fruit extract, beetroot juice powder, and natural flavors.

Alright, now that you know what’s actually in the Moon Juice Magnesi-Om supplement, let’s talk about some pros of this specific supplement. 

Pros

  • Third Party Tested. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not regulate or approve of any dietary supplements, their labeling, or health claims. It’s not uncommon to find supplements on the market that don’t actually have what they’re advertising inside their supplements. Thankfully, Moon Juice does undergo third party testing for the Magnesi-Om powder and their other supplements. This ensures purity and quality products. 

  • Quality ingredients. All forms of the ingredients within this dietary supplement are high-quality forms that are easy for our bodies to absorb. 

  • Evidence-Based. While many dietary supplements make ambitious claims that are often untrue, the claims made by Magnesi-Om do seem to be supported by research studies. 

  • Vegan. This supplement meets the standards for those following a plant-based or vegan diet.

  • Easy to mix. Since it’s a powder form, there is no need to swallow pills, and it may be an easy way to get these nutrients into your daily routine.

  • Convenient. While this product is available in a glass jar, you could also purchase single-serve packets. These can make it easy to take them on-the-go.

Cons

  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding. The use of L-theanine supplements aren’t generally recommended while pregnant or breastfeeding since it can have an antihypertensive effect. Always consult with your doctor or healthcare provider. 

  • Powder form. I know this was a pro, but it may be a con for you if you’d prefer to just take a pill form instead. 

  • Cost. This supplement is pretty expensive, with one jar of 30 servings costing $44 USD, or $39.60 if you opt for the subscribe and save option. 

Should I Take Magnesi-om?

Maybe? Maybe not? The answer to this will depend entirely on you and your unique needs.

According to the research, the claims made by Moon Juice Magnesi-Om are evidence-based and supported. So in theory, this supplement may help to promote relaxation, calm, relaxed muscles, and improved mood. It may also improve brain health, cognition, and bowel regularity. 

Magnesi-Om may be an especially good option if you struggle with constipation routinely. One nice benefit is that it can be easily mixed into a beverage and made into part of your daily self-care routine. I especially like incorporating mocktails in the evening to promote relaxation.

Since the forms of magnesium can impact the digestive system, Magnesi-Om may not be the best option for you if you already struggle with digestive issues such as bloating, cramping and diarrhea. If this sounds like you, magnesium glycinate may be a better form of magnesium supplementation. Magnesium glycinate affords all the benefits of magnesium supplements without affecting the digestive tract. 

Alternative Options

If this supplement seems cost-prohibitive to you, keep in mind that you can combine other products to recreate the same benefits:

  • Magnesium: 1 capsule provides a similar amount of magnesium to Magnesi-Om, however, it’s a slightly different blend of magnesium citrate, oxide, and malate. If you struggle with digestive issues at baseline, magnesium glycinate like this may be a better option. 

  • L-theanine: 1 capsule provides a similar amount to Magnesi-Om 

Using the above products will require you to purchase a 2 to 3 month supply at a time, and they are capsules rather than the convenient powder. However, it will ultimately cost you about $12 per month (compared to $44 per month for Moon Juice Magnesi-Om).

It is possible to find powder versions of magnesium and L-theanine too for a lower cost also. However, you’d likely have to settle for just one form of magnesium such as magnesium citrate or magnesium glycinate rather than a blend of 3 different types like what’s in Magnesi-Om.

The Bottom Line

Magnesi-Om is a dietary supplement made by the US-based company Moon Juice. It’s a powdered combination of magnesium and L-theanine that you mix into a liquid. It’s available in unflavored or flavored versions. 

This dietary supplement contains high quality ingredients and is third party tested for quality. The ingredients are evidence-based and may help to promote calm, relaxation, improved mood, brain health, and bowel regularity. 

It may not be considered safe for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding. You should always consult with your healthcare provider before starting any type of supplement.
