3 Best Inositol Supplements for PCOS (+ Most Affordable)

What’s the best inositol supplement brand for PCOS? As a registered dietitian who has PCOS, I love keeping up with the latest research on inositol and the newest products on the market.

I’m going to weed through the BS brands and give you some of the best inositol supplement brands for PCOS, fertility, insulin resistance, and weight loss.

What is Inositol?

Inositol is a type of sugar that’s naturally found in foods, such as walnuts, Brazil nuts, cantaloupe, citrus fruits, and beans. It’s similar to a B vitamin and it actually used to be commonly referred to as vitamin B8.

Inositol supplements are the most well-studied supplements for PCOS (aka polycystic ovary syndrome).

Based on research studies, we know that inositol can help to:

  • Support healthy blood sugar levels
  • Support healthy insulin levels
  • Reduce body weight
  • Decrease cholesterol levels
  • Reduce carb cravings
  • Improve thyroid function
  • Lower testosterone levels (usually what’s causing common symptoms of PCOS such as hair loss, acne, and hirsutism aka excessive hair growth)
  • Promote regular menstrual cycles
  • Support healthy egg quality
  • Improve IVF outcomes
  • Decrease gestational diabetes risk

There are several types of inositol. The most well-studied ones for PCOS and hormone balance are myoinositol and d-chiro inositol. While there has been favorable research on each of those inositols alone, the best outcomes are usually seen with a 40:1 ratio blend of these two types of inositols.

Who Should Take Inositol?

Inositol is recognized as a safe dietary supplement to take long-term, during pregnancy, and while breastfeeding. This makes it a great option for someone who may benefit from the long list of potential benefits.

In addition to a balanced diet and lifestyle changes, inositol can help improve fertility, PCOS symptoms, insulin resistance, weight gain, thyroid function, and cholesterol levels. You do not need to have PCOS to benefit from taking inositol supplements.

Best Inositol Supplement Brands

The best inositol supplements for PCOS, fertility, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, or weight loss are either: Ovasitol or Bodology

These are both tasteless powders that can easily be mixed into water, coffee, smoothies or foods like oatmeal or yogurt. While it’s virtually tasteless in my opinion, if you do taste anything, it’s a subtle sweet flavor since it is technically a naturally occurring sugar.

Ovasitol

Ovasitol has long been the OG inositol supplement, especially among the PCOS community. It contains a 40:1 ratio of myo-inositol to d-chiro inositol, which is the same ratio that’s naturally found in our bodies and has yielded the best outcomes in clinical studies.

The downside of Ovasitol is that it does come with a high price tag since it’s only available to purchase in a 3 month supply. Despite the higher price tag, Ovasitol is the lowest cost per serving inositol supplement that I’ve come across that’s also third party tested for quality and contains the 40:1 ratio.

Using PRC 202702, the cost of a 90 day supply of Ovasitol is $73.68 (or $70 if you opt into the ‘subscribe & save’ option), bringing the cost to approximately $0.82 per day.

Bodology

If you like the idea of trying inositol but don’t want to commit to a 90 day supply, Bodology is the right supplement for you. It’s a new supplement that contains the same exact 40:1 formula as Ovasitol, however, it can be purchased in a 30 day supply.

Using the code ALYSSA20, if you opt into the ‘subscribe & save’ option for the 60 scoop canister (30 day supply), you can get Bodology for approximately $30 USD or about or $1.02 per day.

Regardless of whether you’re trying to conceive or not, have PCOS or not, or have excess weight to lose, Ovasitol or Bodology are the best inositol supplement brands available for the most affordable price.

Wholesome Story

If you’d prefer capsules over a powder supplement, Wholesome Story is a good option. Similar to Ovasitol and Bodology, it uses the same 40:1 combination of myo-inositol and d-chiro inositol. It also undergoes third-party testing and is available in both a powder form and a capsule form

At first glance, Wholesome Story seems more affordable than the other options. However, it only provides half the dosage that Ovasitol and Bodology provides. If you want to take the higher, recommended dosage of 4000mg myoinositol plus 100mg d-chiro inositol, you’d need to double your dose of Wholesome Story. This equates to two scoops if using the powder or 8 capsules if choosing capsule form. This ultimately ends up making it significantly more expensive than the other brands. Many people get turned off by the idea of 8 capsules daily but if that doesn’t bother you, Wholesome Story is a great option if you want capsule form.

The Bottom Line

Inositol is the most well-studied supplement for PCOS. It can also benefit those without PCOS who want to improve insulin sensitivity, thyroid disease, menstrual regularity, ovarian function or reproductive health.

The best inositol supplement brands are Ovasitol, Bodology, or Wholesome Story. These brands all contain the ideal 40:1 ratio of two types of inositol: myoinositol and d-chiro inositol. This blend of inositols has been shown to have the best results. All of these brands offer a virtually tasteless powder option. If you do taste anything, it’s a subtle sweet flavor since it is technically a naturally occurring sugar.

Ovasitol offers the lowest cost per serving option, however, you’re required to purchase a 3 month supply.

Bodology is the second lowest cost per serving option. You’re also able to purchase just a 30 day supply of Bodology. This is great if you’re looking to just sample inositol to determine if it’s a good fit for you.

Wholesome Story is the most expensive option since its daily dose is only half of what Ovasitol and Bodology provide. If you prefer capsules over a powder option though, Wholesome Story is going to be your best option.
